The Key Ingredient to Authors Robert Kriegel and Louis Patler conducted a study with 1500 participants over a 20 year period. Their task? To become millionaires. Group A consisted of 1245 people, or 83% of the participants. They had to focus on making as much money as they could first and foremost, with personal fulfillment being secondary. It had to be in that order: Become a millionaire first, do what you enjoy second. Group B was the remaining 255 participants. Their objective was the complete opposite. Do what you want and love first, worry about the money later. Question #1: How many millionaires came out of Group A? Out of 1245, over 20 years? Question #2: How many millionaires came out of Group B, the remaining 255 sampled? First of all, there were 101 Millionaires produced out of 1500 that participated. Of those 101, ALL BUT ONE PERSON WAS FROM GROUP B! THE GROUP THAT PURSUED WHAT THEY LOVED PRODUCED 100 MILLIONAIRES. Group A – those who only focused on the money only produced 1! In the movie The Rookie with Dennis Quaid, he plays a baseball player named Jimmy Morris who, after hanging up his cleats, becomes a high school baseball coach. He makes a promise to his team if they play better, he’ll try out for the pro’s. It’s a true story and ultimately, he makes it back to the big leagues. But one of my favorite lines in the movie is when he walks into the locker room and he says to one of his buddies, “You know what we get to do today? We get to play baseball.” That truly epitomizes his love for the game and reminds him of just how lucky he is to be able to do what he enjoys. You’re in sales. Do you know what you get to do today? You get to help people. How awesome is that. You get to help people who are begging for a better way. Why? Their customers want a better way. Whenever I get on a phone, I never say “Let’s sell this guy…” I truly believe in my heart they are sick, they have issues. They are looking for a better way…and I am trying to see if I can help them. It’s that simple. Charles Lindbergh said, “It’s the greatest shot of adrenaline to be doing what you want to do so badly, you almost feel like you could fly without the plane.” Stop selling and go help people. I promise if you help enough people with their problems, you’ll have a much better shot of achieving your monetary goals. The proof is in the numbers…..all 100 of them. |
